Assessment 1: Skills Demonstration and Practice Analysis

Assessment Type: In-Class Skills Demonstration and Practice Analysis

Format: Live, in-class assessment

Components: 3 parts

This assessment allows you to apply key social work skills, including ethical practice, professional communication, case documentation, and critical analysis.

Instructions:

1: Video Viewing

  • The class will begin with your educator playing a video of a social work interview, which will be shown twice. You may take handwritten notes. Focus on the following details:

Time, date, and location of the meeting

Who is present

Background information

Presenting problem

Identified strengths

Challenges and/or risks

2: Assessment Completion

  • Your educator will direct you to the assessment template
  • Download the template and save it to your desktop

Using the provided template, you will complete all three components of the assessment.


Component 1. Case Notes
Write a concise and professional case note based on the client interview as portrayed in the video. The case note should:

  • Be respectful, logically structured, and easily understood by both professionals and the client
  • Accurately summarise observations and verbal exchanges without interpreting the client’s behaviours or experiences
  • Use clear, non-judgmental language

Word count: Approximately 400 words (No references required)
Weighting: 10%


Component 2. Referral Letter or Referral Email
Compose a formal letter or email referring the client to an appropriate external service. This correspondence should:

  • Reflect the tone and structure of a real-world referral written by a practicing social worker
  • Clearly and discreetly convey relevant concerns and request a specific support service, maintaining professional discretion throughout

Word count: Approximately 300 words (No references required)
Weighting: 10%


Component 3. Critical Analysis
Provide a critical analysis of the social worker’s engagement with the client during the video interview. Your analysis should:

  • Identify and evaluate specific strategies the social worker used to build rapport, address systemic injustice, and meet the client’s needs.
  • Include an analysis of how strength-based and anti-oppressive theories/approaches, as well as communication skills, were applied by the social worker in the video.
  • Critically reflect on areas for improvement in the social worker’s approach and discuss what could have been done better.

Word count: Approximately 500 words
Weighting: 15%

: 1,200 words (Word counts for each section are suggestions only; you may adjust them slightly, provided the total does not exceed the limit.)


You need to ensure clarity of expression, objectivity, succinctness, appropriate presentation, correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling (5%).

  • Attend all sessions and complete the set readings

Week 5 In-Class Assessment Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully. These rules are in place to ensure a fair and professional assessment environment.

Assessment Format and Conditions

  • The assessment will take place in class during Week 5, under supervised conditions.
  • You are required to bring a fully charged laptop to class. Please note that you are not permitted to access phones or smart devices during the assessment. Phones must be switched off and placed in your bag at the back of the room before the assessment begins.
  • Unless you have an Accessibility Plan, access to assistive technologies, including AI tools, is not permitted during the assessment.

During the Assessment

  • No breaks will be scheduled during the assessment period.
  • This is an individual assessment-you are expected to work in silence throughout the assessment.
  • If you need assistance or have a question, raise your hand and wait for your educator to come to you.
  • Ensure you type onto the template. Work not typed into the template will be awarded a mark of 0.

Completing and Submitting Your Assessment

  • When you have finished your work, raise your hand to notify your educator.
  • Your educator will check your assessment before you are permitted to upload it.
  • Once approved, you will be directed to upload your assessment as instructed.
  • Do not leave the room until your assessment has been uploaded and confirmed by your educator.

Additional Notes

  • Ensure you arrive on time. Late arrivals will not be granted extra time.
  • Behave in a respectful and professional manner throughout the assessment.
  • To maintain academic integrity, students are reminded not to disclose or share the specific details of the assessment task with others.
