Question 1 – Transition to Professional Practice
You are midway through your student placement in a multicultural community organisation. A
conflict arises between you and a senior sta member over how to engage with a family whose
cultural norms dier from your own. The tension leaves you feeling uncertain about your
professional role and values. You also feel unsupported and anxious about raising your
concerns.
Using this scenario as a springboard, and drawing on learning from Weeks 1–4, respond to the
following:
Analyse two challenges you may experience in the transition from student to
professional practice, using Schlossberg’s 4S model as a guide.
Reflect on how your personal values, beliefs or assumptions may be activated or
challenged in such a scenario, and how engaging in critical reflection could help you
gain insight.
Consider how concepts of cultural competence might help you navigate this situation
ethically and respectfully.
Explain how supervision, support systems, or coping strategies might help you respond
more confidently and professionally in future.

Question 2 – Cultural Competence in Practice
Compare and contrast how cultural competence is understood and approached by:
Xue et al. (2011),
FECCA (2019), and
Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory.
In your response:
- Using the perspective of Xue et al. (2011), explain what cultural competence means for
an individual community services practitioner, and compare this to how FECCA (2019)
and Hofstede conceptualise it. - Describe one barrier you have encountered (or could encounter) when working across
cultures. Discuss how each author/theory might help explain or address this barrier. - Identify two practical strategies for improving your cultural competence and explain why
these are important for your future professional practice. Use at least two of the above
authors/theories to support your reasoning.

Question 3 – Career Planning & Professional Development
Choose a community services role which you aim to pursue after graduation.
Search for 3 current job advertisements for this role on SEEK or Indeed (must be from
your state of residence, where you currently reside).
Provide the hyperlinks and briefly summarise key requirements (qualifications, skills,
experience).
Choose one of these job advertisements and identify two gaps between the job
requirements and your current skills/experience.
For each gap: - Suggest one short course/workshop (include provider) that could help you
upskill. - Suggest one book or scholarly article in APA 7 format to deepen your knowledge.
Explain how completing these activities will prepare you for your future role.
