The essay topic
Research and review the welfare law and its application in practice for ONE of the following
vulnerable client groups:
a. Mental health inpatients requiring protection of their human rights
b. A person with a disability requiring protection from discrimination in the workplace
c. An elderly person requiring protection from financial abuse
d. A First Nation or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elderly person experiencing
discrimination in an aged care home
Your essay must include the following:
▪ Analysis of the reasons why legal protection is needed
▪ Overview of the relevant principles of welfare law that underpin the legal protection
▪ Critique of the current application of the law for the legal protection of your chosen
vulnerable group

Your response to the selected client group requires you to research to identify and apply the
framework of services and arrangements involving the relevant departmental, legislative,
court, tribunal, and administrative structures that operate in and apply to your specific
jurisdiction (i.e., State or Territory in which you reside).
Research literature
Your essay must be based on a review of literature and should include at least eight primary
academic references, i.e., peer-reviewed (scholarly) journal articles or book chapters.
Do not rely upon non-academic and other web-based secondary references, as these do not
constitute academic references for your assignment. If you relied upon such sources for
theoretical support, it would mean you have NOT met the standard referencing requirements
of the assessment task.
Do not use course slides or general knowledge course materials as references, as they are
secondary sources.
