For this case study you are required to describe a scenario (provided below) and analyse the problems or issues involved. Case studies are examined to try to understand what has happened and why, to identify problems and suggest solutions. Case studies often present situations the student would encounter in the workplace, illustrating the complexities of the case and required decision making. Case studies are discussed and analysed in relation to relevant academic literature and research evidence, and conclusions are drawn about why the situation occurred and how best to respond to it.
Case Study Topic
Chloe is a 5-year-old girl who lives with her mother, Lucy, and older sister, Mia. She attends kindergarten at a local primary school. Chloe is normally healthy and active but has presented to the Emergency Department with vomiting and diarrhoea over the past 24 hours. Her mother reports that Chloe has had poor fluid intake and appears tired and less responsive than usual. On assessment, Chloe is alert but mildly lethargic, with dry mucous membranes, sunken eyes, and delayed capillary refill. She is afebrile and has no known allergies. Chloe is diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis.
As a nursing student, you have been assigned to support Chloe’s care during her emergency department stay and contribute to her discharge planning.
